Step 1b: Introduction
Good morning teachers and fellow Queenswayans. Today QSS Guides are in-charge of your reflection period. We are here to bring you fun activities as we celebrate Earth Day 2010.

There are 3 parts to today’s programme.

(The Guide who has finished setting up will write on the whiteboard – Word Search, Quiz & Reflection)

First we will do a word search with a partner. Next we will test your understanding of the environment through a simple quiz. Your form teachers will then follow-up with a reflection.

We hope that you can cooperate with us so that we can enjoy this session together.

We will start our first activity. We will distribute the wordsearch now. Please collect one piece for you and your partner.

Time : 8: 30 am – 12.30 pm

Date: 11th September (Friday)

Things to bring for Competition
1. 2 tea towels - 1 to wipe any utensils that they have used and 1 for wiping table top after job is done
2. small trash bag/ polythene bag to throw rubbish

3. container to bring back your sandwiches

4. plates, utensils, table mat and other decorative items for sandwich presentation (compulsory)
4. apron & scarf (compulsory)

Things to note
1. You must be able to discuss the nutritional value of the sandwich

2. You must complete making the sandwich as well as clean up work area in 1 hour - I advise that you prepare time-consuming ingredients at home e.g. hard-boiled egg.
3. You must present the dish in an attractive manner

Things NOT to do:

DO NOT present egg and cheese sandwich OR egg and tuna sandwich. These are quick fixes which would give you only a slim chance of winning the competition.

Think out of the box. Be wild and creative with your ideas!

We will fully reimburse your expenditure and you'll stand a chance to win a pair of movie tickets for yourselves if you WIN this.

Please note the following changes to the plans for Saturday, 27th June.

Guides going for the Carnival are to assemble at the school porch by 10.00 am. There is one-way transportation to the HQ from Queensway Secondary School. All Guides are to be in blue Polo-T, guide skirt, white shoes and socks with plaits.

Please note that each Guide is to bring $10 for the event to exchange for coupons. You may invite your friends along for the Carnival. However, please inform them to make their way to Bishan on their own. You can join them once we've reached HQ.

Post-update of Heritage Trail

Hello everyone!

On the 3rd of November, we participated in Queensway Girl Guides' Heritage trail which was successfully organised by ALL Sec 3 guides. Prior to this, much preparations were done to ensure that everyone will have an enjoyable and benefiting time; with enjoyable fun, and knowledge to be acquired. To sum up this heritage trail, we have a write-up done by Sabrina on the historical background of Singapore and an interview on Suyee's thoughts regarding this trail done by Kelly.

Ever wondered what the Merlion Statue symbolizes? Well, with the head of a lion and the body of a fish, this majestic figure relates far back to Singapore’s history when it was only a small fishing village named ‘Temasek’. Standing at 8.6m tall and weighing 40 tonnes, the Merlion Statue, currently located at the Merlion Pier, just off of One Fullerton, was initially designed as an emblem for the Singapore Tourism Board.

However, to date, it not only serves as a tourist attraction for foreigners around the world, but also serves as a sharp reminder of Singapore’s humble beginnings as a fishing village. Through years of hardship and perseverance, Singapore began to prosper as a vibrant city, full of life, to this very day. In a nutshell, the Merlion Statue reminds Singaporeans not to take the present for granted and to learn to appreciate the past.

Originally, the Merlion Statue was located at the Merlion Park by the Esplanade Bridge, and officially ‘opened’ on 15 September 1972. Presently, its location is just a stone’s throw away, from its previous position. The official launching of its new site was exactly 30 years after its initial opening. It costs S$7.5 million to relocate the merlion, which is now four times larger than its old structure.

Besides the Merlion Statue located at the Merlion Pier, there are also various other locations in which merlions are located in Singapore. Some of them namely Sentosa and Mount Faber.

1) What is your first impression of the heritage trail?
Ans: My first impression of the heritage trail is that there is nothing special about it and I've no knowledge of the heritage trail at all.

2) What have you learnt in the heritage trail?
Ans: In the Heritage Trail, I've learned many things that i could not learn in school or textbooks easily and I've gained awareness of Singapore's history.

3) Did you enjoy the heritage trail?
Ans: I find the venue of the heritage trail very meaningful and not only does it let me know more about the heritage trail, my fellow sister guides and I are able to communicate better after the heritage trail.

4) If there is another heritage trail being organised, would you come again?
Ans: Yes I will go again because it is really very enjoyable and knowledgeable. And maybe I can gain more knowledge about it that i missed at this trip.

5) Will you recommend your friends and family to come for this trail?
Ans: Of course! I will strongly recommend them to go because i believe that they will learn more about Singapore's history through this heritage trail.

6) Do you think that the duration for the heritage trail is long enough?
Ans: I think it is long enough because if the duration is too long we wouldn't be able to absorb everything and we will get tired too.

7) Do you think that the people who participate in the heritage trail with you are cooperative?
Ans: Yes. Their faces showed that they are very excited, but yet they are cooperative.

8) What age group people is more suitable for this heritage trail?
Ans: I think that there is no age restriction for this heritage trail because I think that no matter you're young or old, we should still have the determination to learn more about the Singapore's history.

9) Do you think that the school should organise such trail for ALL students?
Ans: YES! The more the merrier!

10) Do you think that the other countries students should be invited to join this heritage trail in Singapore?
Ans: YES! We can let foreigners know more about Singapore's history and we can also exchange culture and religion knowledge through the trail and also make more friends!

As you are all aware, Singapore would be hosting the upcoming Youth Olympic Games in 2010. As a precursor to this high-profile event, you are warmly invited to a Carnival at SMU on 10th January 2009 from 1 pm to 6 pm. The SYOG Logo would be unveiled and an array of activities, including a 2010 run, awaits you. 2-way transportation to and from Guide House will be provided.

To all PLs, kindly get 5 girls from your patrol to attend the event. Please email me the names of your Patrol members ASAP by 3rd Jan 2009.

Camp Training

Hi fellow guides! I went for a camp from 9th to the 12th of December
2008 at Camp Christine. It was a camp all about camp training. I
really had a lot of fun there. I have learnt how to pitch a tent and
a kitchen shelter. I have also learnt some simple knots, hitches and
lashings such the reef knot, sheet bend, clove hitch, square lashing
and the snake lashings.

At the camp, in group of 6, we had to make our own baggage rack, a
shoe rack and a clothes line. We also had outdoor cooking there. We
cooked food such as pasta, bee hoon soup, chicken stew and simple
fried rice using the old Girl Guides cookies tin to cook. It was
really fun cooking outdoor as we had to keep the fire going until you
have finished cooking your dish.

I have learnt this very important thing - in a traditional/proper girl
guides campfire, we should not have any stage, emcees, props, etc. we
should only have 1 or 2 campfire leaders who will lead us in the
songs. Songs should be sung one after another without stopping. I
have really enjoyed myself there.

Now that I have learnt how to plan a campfire, if i am
given the permission, i will be able to organise a camp for all of
us. Lastly I would like to encourage all guides who are given an
opportunity to go for such camps to go as it is really worthwhile and
you will be able to learn a lot of new things.

However, there is a compulsory meeting for all Sec 2s and 3s Guides (next year's Sec 3 & 4) on 2nd Jan 09.

Time: 3.00 pm in the Class room outside the Staffroom. The agenda would be next year's activities and the transference of leadership for 2009. The meeting is expected to end by 5.oo pm or earlier. You may attend the meeting in full school uniform. Please have your lunch first as there is ample time prior to the start of the meeting.

Lastly, this concerns the banner making competition. Please note that Sec 3s of 2009 are to work together for this competition. Here are the rules of the competition:

1) The name of the pack/coy and School must be indicated on the banner itself as well as on the top left hand corner of the back of the banner.

2) Banners should be based on the World Thinking Day 2009 theme (“Stop The Spread of AIDS, Malaria And Other Diseases”) and linking it with GGS’ triennium theme for 2009-2011 (“Together We Can Change Our World”).

3) Each banner should come in the following standard sizes:

4m x 1.5m (horizontal display)

3.5m x 1m (horizontal display)

1m x 2.5 (horizontal or vertical display)

All banners must have a margin of 10cm from the edges. Over-sized banners WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.

As a team, you will need to choose which banner size you'll like to create. Here is the tentative schedule that you'll need to stick to.

1. PURCHASING OF MATERIALS to be done by 29th December 2008

2. START OF BANNER DESIGN AND PAINTING to be done by 16th January 2009

3. SUBMISSION OF BANNER TO HQ on 23rd January 2009.

Avril has a design idea that she would like to share with all. Do look out for that and contribute dutifully to your first project as seniors in QSS 1st Coy. Success depends on you.

Please bring sufficient drinking water and cash for your meals and a change of clothes should you have personal plans after your duty slot. Do note that you are NOT to enter shops in uniform or while on duty. Please also bring a form of identification (EZlink or ID) when you report for duty.

As you have signed up for your individual slots, we appreciate that you turn up at the sales venue as expected and call us once you’ve arrived.

Things to do

Report attendance and fill in the Collector’s Cert of Authority upon arrival
For first shift guides:

Set up sales booth, lay tablecloth neatly and place cookie cartons under the table
Count stock and check handover stock sheet
Place necessary amount of cookie tins on the table

Use knife provided to cut cookies into bite-sized samples * ration 1 tin of each flavour per day as sample tins. DO NOT THROW empty sample tins

4. Record the number of tins sold after each transaction

5. Inform guider should your customer require receipts

6. Issue cookie tins in plastic bags provided

7. For third shift guides:

a. Pack up at 7.15 pm.

b. Count stock for the next day’s group

c. Ensure that all administrative items are kept in one box

It's camp time on Sesame Street!

As you would all know, we'll be having our camp on 15-17 Dec and we want to make it a fun one!
Patrol leaders are needed to gather and organise guides in your patrol to design the following:

1) A waterproof and bright flag of at least A3 size (two A4 size papers put together)

2) A patrol identity to differentiate you from the rest. Please be reminded that each patrol has been colour-coded.

3) A patrol cheer complemented with actions which makes use of your patrol name.

We are to meet on 26th November in the school canteen, at 11 am for Ms Latifah to have a look at items 1 and 2. Please inform Ms Latifah if you can make it on the stated date and time.
